Does ICT help with introductions to First Nations or other Indigenous communities?
Short Answer: If you are looking for help in contacting First Nations or other Indigenous Peoples directly, we don't have the connections that you are looking for.
However, if you are interested in learning how to build relationships with Indigenous communities, we suggest taking our training.
Our training provides insight, tips and suggestions on how to develop respectful and sustainable relationships with Indigenous communities. Our training is available in self-guided (eLearning), live-guided virtual and in-person formats. Please see our Indigenous Relations Academy if you are looking for training for yourself or your group.

I purchased the course for someone else to take, but I didn’t enter their information. How will they gain access to the course?
There is an opportunity to leave contact information for the learner in the “notes” section of the order. However, not to worry if this was missed. Please send us an email with your order number in the subject line along with the contact information for the learner.
If someone else registered you:
Confirm that you are entering the same email address that was used when your registration was purchased. Did you use a personal email address at purchase but are now trying with your office email? Did someone else register you and they used their email address? If someone else registered you, ask them for the Welcome letters or contact us to change the email address. -
I requested a refund but haven't received it yet. What can I do?
Please first check your bank account or credit card statement. It may take some time before your refund is officially posted as there is often some processing time before a refund is posted. If have contacted your credit card company and your bank and you still have not received your refund yet, please contact us at learn@indigenousrelationsacademy.com.
General Training
-
What's the difference between self-guided and guided training?
Short Answer: self-guided is self-paced and guided is with a trainer.
Self-guided training lets the learner get started whenever they are ready and finish any time they want without having to speak to anyone.
Guided training happens in real-time on Zoom or in a classroom setting with one of our trainers leading and available to answer questions.
-
Can we take Indigenous Relations before Indigenous Awareness?
No, Indigenous Relations builds on what is learned in Indigenous Awareness so you will miss key information if Indigenous Awareness isn't taken first.
-
Will ICT help me design in-house custom training?
We do customize on-the-fly based on learner questions during our training.
VIDEO MISSING
-
Does Indigenous Corporate Training Inc. provide one-on-one training?
Indigenous Corporate Training Inc. provides only guided or self-guided training at this time. ICT does not provide one-on-one training or consulting services.
-
Does your training focus on working with the Inuit?
The tips and advice on respectful communication are applicable to the Inuit. As we recommend in our training, it's a good idea to research as much as possible the history and culture of every community you plan to engage with.
-
I have Indigenous employees. Do they need to take the training?
Short Answer: The needs of non-Indigenous and Indigenous learners during this training are vastly different and are best not addressed in the same way and not at the same time to ensure a safe learning environment for both learners.
The intended audience for our training is non-Indigenous learners. In particular, for our foundational course, Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples®, those are learners with little to no knowledge of or experience working with Indigenous Peoples.
Our training provides generalized information about Indigenous Peoples, whether First Nations, Inuit, or Metis, across Canada. Indigenous Peoples with a connection to their community very likely have this information in addition to lived experience of their own community's history which puts them in need of different information than we provide in our training.
Our trainers strive to provide a safe learning environment for all learners but this cannot be guaranteed, especially for Indigenous learners. Given the current climate of Residential Schools, Indigenous learners could be triggered by many topics and discussions in the training. The inclusion of Indigenous learners in the proposed training is at your discretion with the understanding that the materials are intended for non-Indigenous learners.
-
Should I take both Indigenous Awareness and Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples®
Indigenous Awareness is the first half of Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples® so there is no need to take both but you will want to take our Indigenous Relations course to get all of the information.
Indigenous Awareness + Indigenous Relations = Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples®
-
I want to take a level 200 course but it says the prerequisite is Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples®, is this really required?
Yes, the prerequisite for all Advanced Level 200 Training is our Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples® course. In some cases, learners will come with a knowledge mastery that is equal to our prerequisite training, in which case you may proceed to our advanced training. Take our Prerequisite Knowledge Quiz to determine your eligibility.
-
I am from a different country but interested in taking your training. Is the material applicable to me?
While the history specifics will be different, the general treatment of Indigenous Peoples (Native Americans, Aboriginal, First Peoples, etc.) is the same. Similar interactions with settlers, similar government bureaucracy, similar residential schools and most importantly similar understanding that Indigenous Peoples are not a homogeneous group. We would suggest you begin with our Indigenous Awareness Self-Guided Training first. This can give you a feel for the material before committing to our full course, Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples®. The general message throughout our training is applicable globally.
Guided Training
-
How long are each of the courses?
One of the benefits of live-guided and in-person training is that learners can ask questions. The duration of a course may vary depending on the level of interaction with learners.
Times for each of our courses in either In-Person or Virtual Live-Guided formats (for individuals or groups) are listed below:
- Working Effectively With Indigenous Peoples® = Full-day
- Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples® for Local Governments = Full-day
- Indigenous Consultation & Engagement = Full-day
- Indigenous Employment: Recruitment & Retention = Full-day
- How to Negotiate with Indigenous Peoples = Half-day
- Working with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples = Half-day
-
Can we record the training session?
No, we don't allow recording of our training sessions.
-
What is the maximum number of participants?
We base our fees on 30 learners as our trainers have found that above that number learners tend not to ask as many questions or participate as much in discussions.
-
Do your trainers speak French?
No, it is recommended to take the French self-guided courses.
-
Can we invite an elder or community member to your training?
Short Answer: It is best to invite Elders and Indigenous community members after our training.
Thank you for asking us about inviting elders or community members to your training session.
It is a great idea to include elders as speakers for your team. However, in our experience, inviting elders or community members to speak at the training, particularly the Indigenous Awareness or Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples® training, dampens the free flow of questions and discussions among the participants.
Participants often worry about inadvertently offending the elders/community members in the room. Our trainers, too, would feel compelled to listen and not interrupt to continue the training as it is elder protocol. This can take time away from the content that we have to share.
With these considerations in mind, we suggest that once the team has received our training, you invite elders to provide your team with an additional community-focused learning session. A level two training session, as it were.
In this way, you can enhance the community's relationship and avoid any interactions that could harm your relationship-building efforts by providing a full circle of knowledge for your team in their relationship-building with Indigenous communities.

If this does not work, ask the person who purchased the enrollment to send you the Welcome letters or contact us. -
How can I ask a self-guided course question?
Our self-guided courses are designed for the learners to work at their own pace and without direct guidance from our instructors. We do our best to answer your questions on the course discussion page. If you find yourself with several questions, we suggest looking into our Live-Guided Virtual or In-Person Training options.
On the right-hand side of each lesson, you will find a small indicator that will open up a discussion section, where you can add your comments as well as read from others who have taken the course.
Our self-guided courses are taken by thousands of students, and we don't have the resources to respond to each question about the material. -
How long do the self-guided courses take to complete?
Short Answer: Every course varies in length and the time it takes to complete depends on your own knowledge mastery!

How come I didn't receive the email for the self-guided course?
The course welcome emails are automatically sent to the email address provided when you made your purchase.
Sometimes email providers do not immediately recognize the sender, so they will land in your spam/junk folder. Please check there first.
-
How come I didn't receive the email link for a public live-guided training session?
Short Answer: Each order is personally handled, please wait 24 hours before sending an email.
Each order is personally processed and handled by our team, so we ask for your patience while we organize the training sessions.
Each participant will receive two (2) emails before their course date:

How do I turn on subtitles/closed captions on the course video?
Move your mouse towards the bottom right corner of the screen. Then, click the small icon, [CC], and select your preferred language.
French closed captions are available in select courses: Indigenous Awareness, Indigenous Relations and Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples®.
-
Why is the video in the course player frozen?
Short Answer: use a course-friendly browser like Google Chrome or a non-company-linked computer.
Frozen video is usually due either to a browser or caching issue.
Sometimes working through a "virtual office" on your company's computer will block video playback for security reasons; however, if you go into "incognito" mode it should correct the issue.
If this persists, please attempt using a course-friendly browser such as Google Chrome OR working on a non-company-linked computer. The next step would be to clear your cache, by going to settings of your browser and removing its logged cache backup.
You may need to speak with your IT team for certain permissions or use another personal computer not linked to your company's platform.
Please check out this troubleshooting guide - Browser Troubleshooting. We find that going through the steps in this guide generally resolves the issue.
-
What should I do about a "Retry Later" error message?
Short Answer: Try accessing the course through your mobile device using cellular data. If you are able to log in successfully, the issue is with your network/virtual office.
This is more than likely an issue with your browser, but this issue can take a few minutes to correct. The platform prefers a direct browser and preferably not Internet Explorer.
If you are using a "virtual office" platform through your company or organization, you may need to speak with your IT team for certain permissions or use another personal computer not linked to your company's platform.
What we recommend is trying to access the course through a non-company-linked computer (separate network), which in most cases resolves the issue.
